The opening range strategy popularized by trading legend Toby Crabel is based on a clear and mathematically logical market phenomenon: the breakout from the pre-market or morning trading range.
While manual trading during the hectic market opening often leads to mistakes, delayed executions (slippage), or emotional decisions, the ORB Trading Bot operates precisely on the 1-minute chart (M1).
This strategy is traded on the 1-minute chart. First, the Open Range, also known as the opening range, is defined. The strategy then aims to trade a breakout from this range after the official market opening. It can be applied to numerous markets such as stock indices (DAX, EuroStoxx, Dow, S&P 500, etc.), bonds (Bund Future, etc.), commodities (WTI, Brent Oil, etc.), precious metals (Gold, etc.), as well as individual stocks. Forex currency pairs such as EUR/USD are also supported.
There are many different approaches to defining the time period of the Open Range. For the DAX, some traders use the high and low between 9:00 and 10:00, while others prefer periods such as 8:00–9:00, 8:00–9:15, or 9:00–9:45. Many traders prefer the DAX range from 8:01–9:00 because significant price movements can still occur at exactly 8:00, so the first minute is excluded.
For the Dow or S&P 500, the first 45 minutes after the stock market opens are often used as the Open Range. This is usually from 15:30 to 16:15. However, every trader may use their own individual approach.
